Transcendence, 2014

My work explores the connection between the physical and the spiritual. I reconstruct meditative landscapes in search of the transformative - places where an emotional response to the physical landscape intersect in a moment of personal enlightenment. The woods have always been a symbol for the unknown. Elemental and seemingly eternal, there’s a serenity that nestles down like a thick fog blanketing the land in mist and mysticism. I go to the woods to be free: free from responsibility, free from insecurity, free from thought. Transcendence is simply forming a connection with nature and discovering my place within the natural world. This series of photographs embodies the mystic of the forest through a revival of the natural sublime. Comprised of hand-cut and layered ziatype prints, these photographic dioramas capture and encapsulate moments emphasizing the ephemerality of life.
